When marriage is a failure, the chief bankrupt usually puts it all in his wife’s name. While steps are being taken to reach North Pole from Ellesmere Land by a chain of stations 100 to 200 miles from each other, as proposed by Dr Stein of the U. S. Geological Survey, ihe Royal Scotts Geographical Society have appointed an Antarctic Committee to take steps for the promotion of exploration in the South Polar regions. They hope to get the Royal Society, with Lord Kelvin at its head, to move the Government, especially as the leading scientific societies of the kingdom are favourable to the enterprise. The sum of £5OOO has been stolen from the counter of the South Paynes Bank, New York. It is understood that a bill will be introduced by the Government next session to define the relation between judge and jury establishing the position that the former is to confine himself to setting out the law, and the latter to deciding on facts.
