Explosion has taken place at Cordite works at Waltham, in which there were 1000 jars of nitrates of sulphuric acid. Every window in the town was broken. Four persons killed and 30 injured. News received that Kab Areza, noted slave dealer in East Africa, has been defeated by small force under Colonel Colville. After his victory, Colville hoisted British flag at Wadelai. At wool sales there is good competition. Prices remain firm at opening rates. Toi Toi’s brand, from New Zealand, realised 9|d per lb. Napier loan has now been fully subscribed.

Wives of strikers at Scottdale tried to intimidate firemen. Police were called out and fired in the air. The strikers intervened, and desperate fight took place. Fifteen of strikers and one woman were shot. Police were repulsed, but rallied, and arrested many of the rioters.
