DAIRY FACTORY COMPANY

A meeting of the Directors of the Dairy Factory Company was held on Saturday afternoon, Messrs C. Wood (Chairman), H. J. Barratt, Curtain E. O. Palmer and B. Mackie being present. The Hon Treasurer informed the meeting that Mr Mclver had sent forward the Memorandum and Articles of Association for registration, which had been effected.

Mr Sawers, writing from Hokitika, under date of April 23, in reply to the Secretary’s letter of April 4, said : * If the Company are only expecting to manufacture a few cwts of butter monthly for local requirements I feel confident that a combined Cheese and Butter Factory can be built and equipped at a cost not exceeding £l,OOO, in all probability less. The approximate estimate (of £1200) was for a fully equipped combined Cheese and Butter Factory, for making cheese and butter for export. It is not at all necessary to duplicate all the machinery and plant in a combined Factorv. The engine, boiler, shafting, strainers, bucketc etc., can be used for the purpose of both departments.’

Mr Sawers offered to obtain, at the Company’s cost, plans and specifications for a combined cheese and butter Factory, but the Directors thought it better to proceed on the jilans already supplied, in order to save delay. A communication signed by Mr Walter Lawson, and seven others, regarding the supply of milk was read. Messrs Garrett Bros, wrote offering a boiler. It was resolved that they be asked to allow the matter to remain in abeyance for a time.

The Chairman said that after reinspection of sites on Mrs O’Donnell’s land, and reexamination of the whole matter, it was suggested that, in order to set all doubts at rest regarding the supply of water, and at the same time to erect the Factory on a solid, dry, site, the building be erected on the opposite side of the road to the selection made, but nearer to the Mt Fyffe road. By this means a gravitation, and never failing, water supply could be obtained. The water to be subjected to a filtration process, percolating through charcoal, and raised by a ram to vessels in the building. The water required for flushing the building would not, necessarily, pass through tanks. A saving would eventually be made by this means, as the boiler and engine would not always bo required for pumping. The first cost as between a well and the ram process would be about the same, but economy in fuel would afterwards be effected.

After those present had discussed the matter

It was carried, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Curtain, that a site on section 108 be accepted in lieu of that originally chosen. Discussion followed regarding the invitation of tenders for erection of the Factory. It was decided to invite tenders, in Kaikoura, Wellington, and Christchurch, for the erection of the premises. Tenders to be addressed to the Chairman of the Company, and distinctly marked ‘ Tenders for erection of buildings.’ Tenders to be posted to, or lodged, with either the Chairman or Secretary, on or before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the 29th of May. The work to be finished by the 16th of August. The Secretary was directed to write for particulars about the supply of hydraulic rams, and the cost. The issue of allotment and call notices to shareholders was directed. The Secretary was instructed to answer Mr Sawers’ letter. The meeting then adjourned until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the 30th inst.
