The Premier has received following cablegram from Goverment of Western Australia ‘ Your cablegram respecting Samoa, received. This Govt concurs in the course you are taking, and will cordially support your representations to Imperial Govt. Have instructed our Agent General to this effect.— Hepburn, Attorney General, for Premier, Perth.’
Melbourne Age insinuates that N. S. Wales opposes Samoan proposals chiefly because Victoria was first to respond to N. Z’s appeal, and says that such jealousy has frequently interfered with concerted action on other matters. The paper suggests Samoa should be made Crown Colony, with Fiji. Sydney Horning Herald, commenting on Samoan question, says while umbrage may be felt at seeming want of concert among Colonies, little time will suffice to show that proper course was taken in wasting no time over an undertaking which N.Z. is incompetent to carry out. Herald, however, eulogises honourable sentiment which prompted N. Z. to make offer.
