Socialists and Anarchists held meetings in Hyde Park today. Police dispersed the Anarchists and seized their flags.
May day was quiet in Europe. Owing to Anarchists denouncing the police as tyrants, the mob severely handled the orators and their friends, and they had, at last, to appeal to police for protection. A large bomb, with unlighted fuse, reported to have been found at the entrance to Guild Hall library today. The Duchess of Connaught was inspecting pictures in the Guild Hall at the time. The bomb was immediatelv plunged in water by police guarding the building. Subsequently it was shown that the police were hoaxed in connection with the find of supposed dynamite bomb, at entrance of Guild Hall library. The missile proving, on closer examination, to be harmless.
At wool sales there is fair competition at opening rates. Carnarvon brand (New Zealand), bringing 84d ; Otaio, N.Z., 9fd. WASHINGTON. May 1 About 400 Coxeyites, headed by band carrying banners inscribed with attacks on financiers, couched in blasphemous language, marched to the grounds of the Capitol today. Entrance was barred by police. Coxey, accompanied by his wife and daughter, was in front of the procession, his daughter was fantastically attired as the ‘Goddess of Peace,’ and rode a white horse. Coxey, and another leader, named Brown, jumped over the wall surrounding the capitol, but were pursued and captured. Both were hustled out of the precincts, whereupon the mob became excited, but were eventually dispersed by the police, after free use of batons. The movement was an entire fiasco.
