BERLIN, April 30
Rumoured that Emperor is assisting Colonial Party in their opposition to N. Z’s proposal for the annexation of Samoa.
The Vossische Zeitung declares its preference for British rather than an American protectorate. It considers Germany is unfitted to restore order there,
German Colonial Party are circulating petitions throughout country in
favour of retention of Samoa. It is reported the Emperor is averse to abandoning interests in the island. SYDNEY, May 2 The Rev. George Brown, wellknown missionary, believes nine-tenths of the natives of Samoa favor a British protectorate, and he is inclined to think now that land titles have been settled the opposition of German residents to British control will not be anything like as strong as a few years ago. The revd. gentleman does not favour N. Z’s proposal. He considers, on principle, the plan is for Great Britain to annex the island or establish a protectorate, and, if thought advisable, N. Z. might be made Executive Colony.
