The Barraha Murder.
SYDNEY, April 21 Valuable horses shot on station near Barraba ; supposed to be work of men who murdered M’Kay, bank manager. Cummings, arrested on suspicion of being concerned in murder of manager of Commercial Bank at Barraba, is said to have been in a starving condition, and admitted having a horse, swag and rifle, but declines to say where hidden. When arrested he was soaking wet and in exhausted and excited condition. He declared he had been shooting kangaroos and had lost his horse. He bad but little money. Some untwisted rope, like false beard, was found on him. Cummings has been remanded for 8 days. SYDNEY, April 26 Police have arrested Alex. Lee. mate of Cummings, on charge of being concerned in Barraba murder. At camp of accused men police found a quantity of telling evidence against them. Lee at first pretended to be mad, and afterwards protested his innocence. Evidence shows that the men cut steaks off horses to satisfy their hunger.
The Costa Rica Packet
LONDON, April 20 In House of Lords, Lord Jersey presented petition from Captain Carpenter with reference to seizure of barque Costa Rica Packet by Dutch authorities. Secretary of State for Foreign Department said he had instructed British Minister in Holland to press claims in regard to vessel, and he hardly believed these representations would be unsuccessful. Lord Jersey claimed that owners and crew of Costa Rica Packet should receive compensation, and that apology should be tendered Great Britain for insult to her flag, Lord Kimberley admitted Captain Carpenter bad been unjustly treated, and said it was case of great hardship. The British Minister at Hague would strongly impress upon Dutch Govt necessity of compensating Captain Carpenter. Lord Jersey said friendly intercourse with foreign Govts would be impossible if example set by Holland in Costa Rica Packet case was followed.
