DAIRY FACTORY COMPANY.
A special meeting of the Provisional Directors of the Dairy Factory Company was held on Saturday. There were present: Messrs C. Wood (Chairman). H. J. Barratt, F. E. Barrett, G. Boyd, J. Curtain, B. Mackie, E. O. Palmer and G. Taylor. The Hon Treasurer and Hon Secy were also present. The Chairman stated that the meeting had been convened in consquence of the tenders for sinking a well being higher than he anticipated, and, also, because of the reported withdrawal of promised milk supply. On reconsideration of tbe matter he thought they should sink the well, and test whether the site chosen would give them a sufficient supply of good water. He then moved that the tender of W. H. Boyens be accepted at 5s per foot for sinking a well and 20s per foot concreting same if required. Seconded by Mr Curtain and carried.
Letter read from Mr R. D. Mclver, Solicitor, respecting Memorandum and Articles of Association.
The Directors then went into Committee to consider the Articles of Association, and on resuming adopted those brought up.
Mr H. J. Barratt asked whether it was wise to erect the proposed Factory on the site chosen, seeing that there were several withdrawals by milk suppliers. For bis part, he was not going to back out if things turned out right regarding water. He thought it better that the matter should be mentioned.
Mr Taylor was not a supplier, but he wished that a site on the Mt Fyffe road had been chosen. One on Mrs O’Donnell’s land at Hughie's creek would satisfy all parties; certainly those now dissatisfied. The Chairman and Mr Curtain contended that they could not satisfy all parties. Their aim was to do the best in tbe interests of all concerned.
Mr G. Boyd questioned getting water at all, and doubted the quality were water obtained.
Mr Curtain said it was useless to discuss the matter further until they saw the result of the test they had decided upon making.
The Chairman added that if tbe present site proved a failure they would have to invite fresh offers. He would not be a party to erecting the Factory on a swampy site. Mr Renner stated that Mr Poole had informed him that he would sink a well on a site at Hughie’s creek for 10s. The generous offer made was not accepted until it was seen what the well-sinking produced ; though it was pointed out that a site near Hughie’s creek was not under offer.
In answer to a question about milk suppliers withdrawing as shareholders, the Chairman said that those who had signed an application for shares were liable for the amount thereof. Were that not the case some non-milk-supplying shareholders would now withdraw, could they do so (but they could not), being disgusted with the action of those who, because they could not get their own way in matters, were acting in such a petty and senseless manner. It would be time enough to do what some threatened when the Directors determined to follow a course opposed to prudence and common sense. There was no reason at present in the objections raised to the action of the Directors.
Tbe Secretary was directed to write and make enquiries about the supply of plant. The meeting then adjourned.
