THE KAIKOURA STAR. KAIKOURA, MARCH 27, 1894. The Licensing Election

A moderate Success! These three words shortly, and literally, express the result of the Election of a Licensing Committee for the Ashley District. Telegraphic intelligence to hand—-since affirmed by the official declaration gives the issne of the contest as the election of six Moderates and two Reductionists. Though the Moderates have been successful in obtaining a majority, by six to two, on the Committee, their success is literally a very moderate one. The polliug throughout was, comparatively, very close, indeed. As between the fifteen candidates there is not a wide margin, only some two hundred and twenty two votes in all. Striking an average, less than four hundred and fifty votes represents the difference between the respective sides. Nothing, relatively, to speak sf. As to what will be done during the next three years by the Ashley Licensing Committee it is not an easy matter to determine. Surprising, however, will it be to us if the Moderates do not prove to be men who will adopt decided, but reasonable means, to bring about an improvement in the conduct of licensed houses within the Ashley district. They have the power to prove their worth as Temperance reformers—for such true Moderates really arc when they act up to what the law permits them to do. And, despite all that has been said to the contrary, the

Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control gives Committees much greater p- ver than half the people imagine. T’ le amendment made in the liquors la w \*f this Colony places Committees' t^’a much more commanding position han heretofore. Well will it be if they exercise their powers aright, a[ d tbat the exercise thereof makes f or true Temperance. ,
