CRICKET.
The phenomenal success of the Canterbury players over those of Auckland has been accentuated by an equally glorious victory over a fairly strong N. S. Wales teain, who have been vanquished by the ‘ Cantabs ’ with an innings to spare.
The skipper of the N. S. W team says:—‘ Our team is, in my opinion, strong enough to tackle the best team our Colony could produce; and would, I think only suffer defeat in such by a few wickets. Every man in the team is well up in first class cricket in Sydney.’ This makes the victory of the Canterbury men more meritorious. True, they had luck, great luck, in batting a on good wicket, while the visitors had to bat on a wet one.
Ulric Collins came out with the fifth highest score—26—for Canterbury.
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb 2 Canterbury match with N. S. Wales postponed, owing to rain. Feb 3
Canterbury first innings 331, N. S. Wales first innings 119, second innings, 3 wickets for 24.
