THE KAIKOURA STAR. KAIKOURA, FEB. 6, 1894.

A chorus of exultation is going up because some of the efforts put forth by the Government in the interests of Labour is held to be defective. Says the Wellington Post : ‘ The Labour Legislation for which the Hon W. P. Reeves is responsible is proving defective, and as full of faults and flaws—in fact almost as much a sham as its author. (The italics are ours.) Condemnation of the language used by the Post is unnecessary ; it condemns itself. Instead of exultation, regret should be expressed at the law having so far failed to perform what was intended. Exultation will, however, he short lived, or comparatively so. The Legislature will sooner or later remedy what are draughtsman’s errors, purely technical mistakes. The true interests of labour will be recognised and protected in time, for, of a surety, every effort put forth to delay such a consummation will meet with its Nemesis. Retributive justice is certain, sooner or later, to overtake the dispoiler of Labour. We admit that at times Labour leaders * lose their heads,’ so to speak, and so fall into error in their efforts to ameliorate toilers conditions, both as regards reward for their labour and hygienic conditions. That, however, is nothing compared with the actions of those who ‘ lose their hearts,’ or, rather, steel them, and refuse to listen to the voice of conscience. The beartlessness of many who, 1 faring sumptuously, and arraying themselves in fine linen,’ gratify their own appetites and desires, but who pay Jess heed to the wants, conditions and comfort of human beings . than that of their own dumb animals is responsible for an enormous percentage —perhaps 99 —of dissatisfaction and misery in the world. The true interests of Labour will, in" time, obtain recognition and secure just dues. Any effort, however, to crush 'capital will retard matters, and prove injurious to the cause of the toiler.
