ASHBURTON, Jan 4 Heaviest rain since 1875 fell today, commencing at 10 this morning, and still continues. In 45 minutes, just after noon, *BB inches rain; and in an hour and a quarter at another point 125 inch fell. Heaviest Storm was between 12 and 1, but was not general. Harvest work still going on, but since then whole district been visited and much harm has been done to crops; but fortunately comparatively little wind, otherwise the storm must have been disastrous. Yesterday the crops looked splendid.
