WRECK and LOSS of LIFE.

MELBOURNE, Octr. 20.

The steamer Cheviot, belonging to Howard Smith & Sons, which sailed from here yesterday for Sydney and Brisbane, was wrecked outside the Heads, near Point Nepean, at nine o’clock last evening. The Cheviot, otx leaving, had 11 saloon and 22 steerage passengers. Later news received from Sorrento states that one of the crew reached that place at 2. 40 this morning, and States that the vessel struck on a rock about nine last evening. He at ones jumped into Hie. waler atui succeeded iu getting ashore. On the news becoming known the crews of the lifeboats proceeded to the scene of the disaster, and set up the life-saving apparatus, by means of which a number of persons were safely landed from the vessel. This morning it is evident that the ship is breaking up, as her cargo is coming ashore. Queenscliffe, Octr. 20tb, 9 a.m.: A fishing boat has returned from Portsea, bringing news that 24 persons have been saved from the Cheviot, and that between 35 and 40 are supposed to have been lost.

MelbourneOctr 20; Furtherparticulars regarding the wreck of the Cheviot show that the vessel lost her propeller when passsing through the Rip last night and drifted on to the rocks which she struck with great force. The crash broke her in two. All the passengers and crew on the fore part of the vessel being drowned. Only the saloon passengers, the captain, chief cook, third engineer and two firemen were rescued.
