NEW ZEALAND. [Star Specials.] Wellington, Tuesday. The Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court commenced here yesterday. The Grand Jury found a true bill against Whitelaw, the ex-superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum. At Dunedin, Moritzon, who was convicted at the last sitting of the Supreme Court, of embezzlement, whose conviction had been confirmed by the Appeal Court, made a long statement, complaining that at his trial Judge Gillies had improperly ruled as to the rights of his counsel to cross-examine witnesses, which ruling prejudicially affected his case, and he asked the Court to suspend passing sentence until a petition, which had been numerously signed, respecting him, had gone before the Governor. The Chief Justice deferred sentence until Thursday. The Grand Jiury threw out the bill, against 1 eter ii'inuri,,, - <u nection with the Roslyn tram accident. The financial statement is expeeted to be delivered to-morrow, in which Major Atkinson will make a full explanation of the Ministerial policy with relation to local self Government and finance.
