OFFICIAL WELCOME TO THE VISITORS.

On Wednesday last, at noon, His Worship the Mayor and a large representative number of fellow town people including Mr G. Carson, M.H.R., Mr W. Empson, and Major Kemp, assembled at the Borough Council Chambers to award a welcome to the visiting Athletics and Cyclists. His Worship, in appropriate words, welcomed with pleasure the visitors on behalf of the people of Whanganui. After Mr Carson and Mr Empson expressed the pleasure they felt at giving the visitors a hearty welcome, Major Kemp, who was received with prolonged applause and whose address was inter, preted by Mr Goffe, said he was very pleased indeed to be able to welcome the Australian and N.Z. representatives, who had come to try their skill and prove their worth in our park. This reserve was a place of great note as in olden times great fights had taken place on it, but since the advent of the Europeans it had been made it into a pleasure resort he cordially welcomed them to the fairy land o{ N.Z. and thought they would have a very hard job to beat the Whanganui boys. He especially welcomed the Maori representative, young Hori Eruera of Auckland, and hoped he would come out vigorous in the events he was competing in. After His Worship had been thanked by the visitors for the cordial welcome awarded them, three hearty cheers were given for the visitors who responded for the mayor and people of Wanganui.
