Fortifications are abptr6 f to be began, in the heigliboarbood of Jiome, which, observes the PaH Mall Gazette, "'although not sufficiently extensive to convert the town into a regular fortress, will nolo&ger leave the capital of Italy, as it is at present, an entirely open and unprotected city. When the General Commission of Defence sat some years ago, fbrtifica» tions for the defence of Koine, as well as of the kingdom* generally, were included in the plans prepared by it. The works then proposed consisted of a continuous encienfce, enelo-ing the town, with a double girdle of detached forts r the most advanced of these latter being nine or ten kilometres from the centre of the city--I'he cost of carrying out this project tvould, however, have been necessarily irery considerable, and therefore Lieu-tenant-General LongOi a member of .the Committee of Artillery and Engineering, ;vas directed to prepare a scheme of forti-* [ications on a more limited scale, and it is this plan which, after being revised by Lieutenant-General Bruzzo, commandant of the military division of Home, is to serve as the basis for the works now about X) be executed.
