THE Inangahua Times, PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY WEDNESDAY, NOV. 28, 1877.
The whole of Monday's sitting of tho Diatriot Court waa occupied in airrnsr the beggarly animosities of some two pr three persons who by the popular verdict ought to baye had theic splenetic heads knocked well together. We know that private jnalonsiea and personal pique have a good deal to do in the conduct of affairs in all small communities, but we do not think there ia any community in New Zealand where such extremes of this character are harbored and obtruded upon the public as here. Ope would be inclined to think that time must hang rather heavily upon the hands |pf those who can thus afford to, lose days pel days together in th ; s senseless mud-^throw-ing. The surprise is not lessened nt find^ ing this kind of ' amusement " aided and abetted with a seaming gusto by counsel. If people could only see themselves as others see them, they pron bably would hesitate twice before dragging out their dirty linen to be washed in this manner before the gaza of the public. The spectacle of men who ought to know better thus flying at each others throats can reflect nothing but discredit, and for the general credit the sooner this evil disposition is cut short the better, for 0,11 concerned The work o f parading all this ebullition of bad feeling and small mindidness before the public has been performed by our contemporary, and this act is a fitting sequel to the whole, ani we trust we snail be spared such qnather paltry exhibition.
It ia said, and we believe upon good aqfhoiiry, that the Chairman, of the Buller County Council has been so fat 1 successful in hia mission to Wellingtoq re the re-construction, of the Buller ■Reefton rond, tlmt the Q-overninent has provided a npecial grant of £4000 in aid of the work. How long it would have taken the Buller Council- to arrive at this result, by the ordinary form o,f official correspondence, it is difficult to eueaa. but there ia every probability that if accomplished at all, it wnuld not be until after, a long anrl vexatious delay. The energetic action of the body in question bag, however, borne immediate fruib and furnished another instance o,f the virtue of personal intercession in matters of this nature. And, while upon the subject, we may remark that the Council here would do well to take the same means of laying before the Government the urgency of completing the Grey^Keefton road, for we feel certain, that, •wpr.e the matter properly rep ©sent erl, authority ftmthe necessary expenditure will be instantly given. Apart, however, from the Grey road, there are a number of matters directly affecting the well-being of this County, which it would be well that the Government should be apprised of. nnd apprised of only as could be done by a personal interview. As far as can be judged from the present political situation we might aimosb as well be for the time being wifehaufc representation in the House aa with the gentlemen who now weild our interests there. Both Mr Kennedy and Mr Wooloock have in a largw sense lost the ear of the reigning Government, and that bpnig go can hardly be exp.ected to achieve as much for the district a,s th.ey might l\ave been able to d,o unrler. other circumstances Under all theaa circumstances we think that much good might be done by following th.c example of the Buller Council. The session of Parliament is flow drawing to a close, and if such a, mission W^re undertaken it would be advisable that if should be entered upon, before the HoUjSe breaks up.
Tho sittings of tho District Court were brou ht to a close on Monday last, and Jud"e Weston left for G.reymoutli this morningTho liuiiTitiirjii County Coiyicil will inpet; £or the I>is.patch of business, at the usual hour today. A clock will be placed pyer the ] main entrance. One portion of the building we observed, js Bet apart fop private boxes, ; and this would seem to indicate that a post' ni mi or letter carrier is dot considered necee* i sary for a £o*7ll lijke Reefton. Whether the public will regard the matter in the same light romu|ns to be seen, fprourown port we consider that as the Post OfR c will be ( plnced nt such a disfuncg from what may be | termotl the business centre pf the town it ia 1 übsolutely necessary that a pqstrafjn ihould be ' appointed as well as a receiving bo* placed in some convenient situation in Central Broad* way. As the bnild|ng prqgressea, however, it will bo time to refer uiqre fully to these ; requirements. The programme of the forthcoming gather* ing iv aid of the Hospital Funds has been sq fur arranged that the different societies have agreed upon united action. Dancing will constitute a leading feature in the day's amusement. A small charge will be made at tho gates for entrance, and this will be chief, if not th,e oqly source qf ceyenuo. The gathering will b,e conducted upon strictly Goad Tetiplar principles, but so so.qn as tfyo duy is over the Tempers will fall out pf the. management, sp to speak, and a ball under the auspices of tho remaining societies will be held. Jt ia not yet decided whether the demonstration will be h,eld on Friday, lion* day, or Tu.es.day, but it is possible that the committee qf management may see the advisability of providing for the contingency of a third day'? racing on Pern Flat. Mr A. E*. Quinness o,f Qreymou,th, hftß entered intq partnership, with Mr E. Q-, B. Staite has reached Wellington completely restored to health, and will after a short sojourn in tho Empire City return to |ie.efton, and resume, his practice h,ere. There was a sitting of tho Resident Mtigistnte's Court yesterday, but tho only husiaeis set down for hearing was two unimportant debt cases, which being disposed o.f, fche Court adjourned for one week, 4 meeting of tho Stewards o,f th,e Jfopkoy Club, will be held at Jolli&Va Hfttel, this evening, at 8 o'clock sharp. The members of the Heather Bell Lod,ge, Beefto.i, will commemorate their anniversary on Friday evening next by a ball in Gilmer'g Hall. Q-reat preparations aarte t we le^nij being made by the lair one 3 for the occasion, qnd. the gathering provisos to bo very largely amended. The members of the Lodge will tnp,et at the Lodge room in the evening, and at 6. p.m. will nyirch in procession, to -the Uall. The mem,b.ers of $be Town, Brae.ii Band will turn out fo.r the fjrsj; time to. head the procession. The cor respondent of tU,o.New Zo;ilq,nd Times relates o.no little nnecd >te which he heard in the G-overnnijent whips' room. It appears that on the night the lase Government wew> beaten,. Mr Thomson, of the Clutlrn,- produced his fiddle, and commenced tho,t classical' selection,! "See the cquauering hero comes.' Ie was resqlvod;, however, that qne ftddle wai no.t neayly adequate to. celebrate the occasion, so, a messenger wa9 dispatched to Be'.limy'-s cook for his ft Idh 1 . The messenger knowing that said cook had, iv an unguarded moment sold his instrument, nent up Mr Sheehftii's compliments, to Bishop Redwood, a,nd asked the loan of his. Addle. The Bishop reaaiiy agreed, and lygh jinks were kppt up allnigbi. My Sheehan whs perfectly innocent of having sent for the Bishop's fiddle, and his surpriso can be easily imagined when h,is Lordship told him he, was quite welcome tjo, it on, (Uiy division. Sir Julius Yogel of two, perfect models of the Colorado beetle, to be, placed in public pJ,aces,.BO that (his new pest to the agriculturist might be idem'iOed when, seen. Sir Julius V-ogel re» paired them through tho Prussian Grovevn* ment, Mr GjilHes went to, the e^penao, of having the oug.es ro-glared, and mounted, and; directed that. one of them should be placed in the. Auckland Museum, and the oth,er en> trusted to Mr Alfred Buckland for exhibition amongst those attending his sale yardfc in country or town. The one sent to, tho Museum was placed in the large hnll, and a few days Oijo it was missed from its place, and inquiries were made in all directions, ia tha hope; that it might have been removed under name kind of pi-rmiasion far some useful purpose. Up ty>, Saturday night no trace of it had beeij discovered) and them appears to be little doubt that it had been stolen. Jt ia difficult to conceive what inducement; there could be for so petty and mviton a theft. '■'•Snyder " tells the Poverty B,uy Standard that eleven bagmen have had their likenesses taken at the Gis.bnr.ne photographic, studio.
