REVIVAL.
The directors of this company held their usual monthly meeting on Saturday last, and adoptod the very injudicious course of letting another contract for extending (he present tunnel. It should bo borno in mind that construction of this work is very different to an ordinary
contract for opening a level where the i p reef has already been proved to exist, J 1 and that it is only necessary for the con- .' tractors to drive to a given point as f instructed. The work referred to is one f entirely of a prospecting nature, and it is c incompatible with all reason to expect J contractors to carefully watoh the various { forms of the] rock or such indications as | might be mo met wilh as the work pro« < eeed^. Asa rule the sole object of all j men contracting is to make the work give as good a remuneration as possible, , and considering the amount of delay already caused by contractors throwing j up the work it would certainly have shown wiser discretion on tho part of the , directors to havo engaged a good praotical man as mauager, with a few waqcs men to find the stone first and contract aftewards.
