THE METROPOLITAN POLICE.

In tho Metropolitan police there nrn 7,917 Englishmen, 820 Irishmen, 145 i Scotchmen, 13 Welshmen, and 23 foreigners, Of the forfeinner 12 are German, ' one is a Eussian, one an American, one • a Swede, and one n Norwegian. Mr Drusoovich is an Englishman by birth and his mother an Englishwoman. Over 1,000 have served as soldiers, of whom 2 are superintendents, 23 are inspectors, 69 are sergeants, and 913 private constables. The married men comprice 23 superintendents, 254 inspectors, SB3 3, 103 constables, and the" single men in» elude two superintend nuts, 20 inspectors 154 sergeants, aud 2, 802 constables. Tbe rank and pay of tho police are— Four district superintendents, one at £800 and three at £700 per annum; 25 superintentehdents, at salaries ranging from £88 to £275 with an aUowanoeifc £11 for clothing; 277 inspectors, at salaries ranging . from £88 to £276, with an allowance of £10 for clothing 1053 sergeants, at salaries ranging from £88 to £162 ; and 8.913 constables, at salaries from £62 to 88. Married men obtain an allowance of 4d. per week in lieu of coal*, of which single men are entitled to 401 b each per week iv winter, and 201 biv summer. Tne force is divided into 20 divisions. Its full force in 1875 was 10.268 ; in 1867 it numbered 7,692 men. Two men have been in the force for more than 40 years ; 31 for more than 30 years ; 718 for more than 20 years ; 3*439 for more than 10 years, and 6 483 for more tbari five years. The special detective corps at ■ Scotland- yard consists of one sifperinten* dent, at £450 per annum ; three chief in« speciors, at £5»6s 2d per week ; Ihreo inspectors at £4 7s per week ; and 16 detectives, divided into two classes, the first class receiving £3 2s 8d each weekly aud the second class £2 7s 4d per week.
