PERSEVERANCE.
\ For some time past the general sports , from this mine have been so encouraging that I was induced to make a special visit to the scene of operations this morning, and from the following particulars of the general aspect of the claim it will be seen that the above may fairly be pronounced as presenting a most promising future. Before giving any detail of the workings, it will doubtless be remembered that a trial crushing was made some time since from this mine of about 35 tous of stone, and which could scarcely bo said to have been effected under the most favorable circumstances, when the result produced an average of about 8 dwts to the ton. Since that took place a very considerable amount of work has been done proving stone to exist in such quantity that with crushing power available at a reasonable cost, it must bo assumed that the result can be no other than highly satisfactory, The lode is in the first instance exposed on the surface 100 feet above the upper tuunel. In this same drive the reef has been driven on about 70 or 80 foot, and an uprise constructed on the stone for 45 feet showing a well defined body of quartz fully four feet thick. 'From this level a shaft has been sunk to a depth of 85 feet still carrying the lode down. In another tunnel 105 feet below the above mentioned a fine clear reef is exposed in the roof for 109 feet in length averaging at the least four feet thick. Several tons of stone are stacked outside each of the tunnels, which is perfectly free from mullock the whole being clear stone, and some of it shows very fair gold. I refrain from stating the probable yield, but the lode certainly appears to have considerably improved in quality upon the lower level. The workings at the present time expose a block of stone 109 feet in length, and proves over 160 feet of stone overhead. It may therefore be reasonably calculated that from the present low level there is sufficient stone at command to occupy the Dauntless battery of] 5 head for fully 12 months. A tramway to connect the com« pany's miue is now in course of construction. The length of the line will be 53 chains, the first seven chains is upon the same level as the low tunnel. At the end of this line a shoot 120 ft in length will be constructed at the foot of which a receiving paddock is to be erected, capable of holding 100 tons of quartz. From this paddock to where the Dauatle.«s Company's tramway is readied will be 46 chains. These works are now in course of construction, and will enable llie transit of stone to the battery to be oarricl on with such facility that c en assuming the largo body of quartz a I command to uive a yield only equal to the trial crushing a very fair profit will be realised taking into consideration tint arrangements have nhvady been cffiicied with iho Dauntless Extended Company to crush for 11s per ton.
