CAREER OF A BUSHRANGER.
The celebrated bushranger, Martin Cash, died at his residence, Glonorchy, on Sunday, the 26t.fi ult. It will be remembered, writes tlte SyJnoy Morning Herald, thnfc Cash, in Uie year IS7O, published in book form an account of his adventures, from which we {{loan the following particulars : — Ife \rns born in the year 1310, in tho town of ftnniscorthy, Wexford, Irolund. Cash's career, as a young roan, wus, according to ]its own account, a series .of events calculated to develope into the mire serious phases of crime, and he was subsequently convicted of shooting; a love rival namod Jo3sop, for which offonco he wns sentenced to seven i years' penal servitude. After a brief inenrceratinn in tho Cork gaol. Cash was sent wilh 170 other convicls by tho ship Marquis of IFnntly to Botany Biy. They arrived at Sydney on Uio 10th February, 1828, subsequent to tho assignment or hiring out system coming iuln operation. Cash was " assigned " to Mr Q. Bowman, of llichmond. Ho subsequently made his escape, and in 1837 he wont to fiobart Town. He was not long out of the hands of tho authorities of tho law, and for the next few years he led a prison life, which was ultimately broken by his escape from Port; Arthur in company with Jone3 and Kavnrinj;h in December, 1812. After remaining at large nearly twelve months, during which period be was at the head of a band of bush rangers, and was tho terror of the whole colony. Cash was again capturel, but not till after the most strenuous cserlions were made to again lay hands on him, and a reward of 200 guineas (with a free pardon and a free passage from the colony, if required) was offored to any person who would give information that would load to his capture. In September, 1813, he was tried and convicted of murder, and sentence! to death. He was, however, afterwards reprieved and sent to Island. He remained ti:l that establishment was broken up, when ho had the satisfaction of bidding adieu to what he toruis that "island of despair," and returning to Tasmania, where he was appointed by tho lato Hon. W. E. Nairu to take charge of the Government Gardens. On resigning that situation he went to New Zealand for four years, aft^r which he returned to Tasmania, " and," he. adds, " having saved a iittlo money I purchased a farm at Glenorchy, whero I resolved .to pass the remainder of my days in the calm and tranquil enjoyment of rural retirement.' 1 Cash continued to devote himsolf to farming pursuits up till the time of his death."
