THIS , Provincial Council of Otago being 'rl"sirous of stimulating invonl.ion, tod securing »,h« uso of gold saving., apparatus in couneotion with hydraulic mining adapted to. ( tho purpose of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than' any of the machines or methods at prooent ih use, has votod the sum of £250, to be offered as a bonus for the invention of such an apparatus, subject to "such competition and regulations as via Ilonor the Superintendent may soem fit. ■ Notico h hereby given ih accordance with tho voto of the Council, that plana aud proposals ' foi* ' such an apparatus will bo received for consideration, up till t'io first day ( of August next onsuing. The following particulars are published for the information of intended exuibitore of plans. The plans and proposals will bo submitted to % body of judges, composed of experienced miners, aud such other persons as his Ilonor the Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them the following points will be kept in view : — 1. Inventors aro expected, to be conversant with the machines and methods at prosont in use, and not to offer simple reproductions of tho same. They are also expected not to offer reproductions of machines or methods which have, fallen into disuse. They can obtain practical inforrcation on these and other points, by application through' the post to the Central ■Mining, Association at Naseby. If, in tho opinion of the judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy of adoptioirby tho miners in the Province, tho Government undertakes to furnish copies of the same to each of the Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, and the payment of the bonus will then bo determined in the folio iving manner, payment being duo withiu eight months from the date at Which th.c copies of tho plans and instructions 1 have been issued to the various Mining Associations. By the fact of tho apparatus being used by at least tweuty-fivo sluicing companies iv tho Province, employing ah averse of at least five men each, f ji< tho period of six months, and the intention of the sarno iiqin panics to continue tho uso thereof ; bucli fapt and such intention being verified by the allirmation before a Warden, of the Managers or representatives of such companies. In the event of two or. more plans bring considered worthy of trial, the Government will determine in what manner tho competition shall be carried on, aud the best glau discovered. As tho bonus is only intended to itimulate inventive genius, every inventor may reap a further benefit from his invention if he think fit, by taking out a patent.
