ROAD CONTRACTS.
[TO THB EDITOR , IJUNGAHUA TIMES.] Sir— 'ln answer to the letter of John Jan-old, I beg to say that as a ratepayer I have a perfect right to call publio attention to what I consider is a most improper proceeding for the engineer or anybody else to allow him, for his private convenience, to make an excavation near the centre of the street. Would the Council or the engineer allow anybody else.torootup the street and cart away the foundation for private purposes ? I should think not. It may suit John Harrold to soft-soap the engineer, and he may do it as muoh as he likes, but he won't soft-soap the publio I can't see how the engineer can be " most punotual in looking after the works," when three* fourths of bis time he is not in town. It is not tbe first oooasion I have had to complain of road making under John Harrold, on my referring the engineer to the work done at the south end of Bridge street, I was told that he, the engineer, had nothing to do with it. Jn this instance tho work complained 6F was near roy own property, and yet though a large ratepayer I am told that I hare no right to complain. It is high time the Council should interfere in this matter. I am, &c, HANS JACOBSEN:
