THE Provincial Council of Otago being flfisirous of stimulating invention, and scouring tho uso oi gold saving apparatus in connection with hydraulic mining adapted to the purpose of extracting gold from auriferoim earth more completely than any of tho machines or methods at present in use, has voted the sum of £250, to be offered as a bonus for the invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as his Honor the Superintendent may seem fit. Notice 19 hereby given iv accordance with the vote of tho Council, that plans and proposals fov such an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till tho first day of August next ensuing, The following particulars are published for the information of intended exhibitor? of plans. The plans and proposals will be submitted to a body of judges, composed of experienced miners, and such other persons as his Honor the Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them the following points will be kept in view : — 1. Tho cost of the apparatus as it appears on tho plan, and its probable cost and tear and wear. ' 2. The readiness with which it can be secured in any part of a tail race, and be removed from one part to another oad again scoured. 3. Its adaptability to the diffcrout widths •nid falls of. tail races used in different districts 5 to the varying tfuautities of water used either by choice or necessity for flushing the same j and to tho different kinds of washdirt from which gold is obtained in tho Province. Inventors aro expected it be conversant with the machines and methods at present in use, and not to offer simple reproductions of the same.. They are also expected not io offer ropro* ductions of machines or methods which have fallen into disuse. They can obtain practical information on these and other points, by application through tho post to tho Central Mining Association at Naseby. If, in tho opinion of the judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy oi adoption, by the miners in the Province, the Government undertakes -to iurnish copies of the samd to each of the Mining Associations in the .Province with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, and the payment of the bonus will then be determined in tho following manner, payment being duo within eight months from the date at tho copies of tho plans and instructions havo been issued to the various Mining Associations. iiy the fact of the apparatus being used by at least twenty-live slufcing companies in the : Provinco, employing au average of at least : five- me;i each, fiv the poriod of six months, ■ I l ati? i the 1 intention -of the same 'aotnpjamos to [ cdntiiiub iho uso theroof ; such fact and such intention being verified by tho affirmation ■ before a Warden, of tho Managers or repi c- . sontatives of such companies.
