In reply to a question from the bpeaker whether he had. any explanation to offer, he made a long statement to the effect that he had no personal feeling against Whitaker, and wrote m pur* suance of his duty as a journalist, with a view of exposing what he heheved to be a great public wrong. He had been informed of the facts by farmer residents in WaiUato, and they tallied with his. own knowledge acquired during several yeara residence there, lie had been for years familar wi th these transactions, and never heard Whitaker connection with them disputed. He quoted speeches made in the House on the Native Lands Bill showing equally strong language used by the members, and believed he did hia duty as a Journalist in doing as he did, and it was irapoasible far him to surrender bis convictions. If the House on enquiry thought him indiscreet, he would abifle by its decision. Whitaker considered explanation ag» gravated tbe offence.
