•At the conclusion of the case of Regina 1 v. Brown, 'in ' the District Court, on Wednesday, last, it became necessary,' in'order to afford th« Jury jin 1 the 'case 1 an' opportunity of ile-' 1 .Ho'erating ujion their verdict, to clear the 1 Cburft. Upon this direction being' 'given^' Mr South remarked fo his' Honor upon the 1 'great' inconvenience which subh a course-g ave rise to. His Honor miid that I he was only too well aware of the want of extebled Cdnrfc* house accommodation. "Both Himself, the member« of the profession, and'the Prd&p, 'had " urgdd the ' fti fitter upon j.tbe attention of the Government, 'and 'he Wris'glad to say' that at length there was a likelihood of the requisite pron ;.vision being mnde, ad plans ! for a rtew : Court.'hotfse had been prepared. ' Ho had 'long regarded it as 1 a ( singular Janomaly that the most important' dis» tricfc within tho judicial circuit should be the worst off in the matter of Oourt-houso accommodation. In connection with this matter it may be well to state that as tho ' Colonial Architect ia at tho present time taking a tour of the Colony, valuing rtnd reporting upon the public buildings in the different districts, ib fa most probable'tliub on 'his' arrival --here, in tlie course of a few weeks, dome definite moVe will be made by the Government towards- the erection of an entirely new building, " •' •■- ■• ■•■• • ■"" » '"* " ~ ■
Upon the names of the jurora being called over at the opening of the District Court on Wednesday last one of the number summoned, James Lawn, was not present, but a moiJlcal certificate was produced. ' Ilia Honor wiehod it to 1 be known that the Court could not accept medical' certificate's in just ideation of ! absence, unless there 'was some person present to testify' to the signature of the medical gentleman giving the certificate. GBhia being the first occasion of the 'hind the matter would be overlooked, but in 'future the Court would not receiv.o certificates in the form presentedTho sittings of the District Court com. mended" oh "Wednesday morning laßt. The two criminal cases Kegina v. Brown and Eegina v. Healey with one bankruptcy case occupied the whole of the first days sitting. As the case of Regina v. Brown is in many respects An exceptional case, we report the proceedings pretty fully. The case of Regina v. Healey,in which the prosecutor was a man named Christen son, was for an alleged assault with intent t6 do grevious bodily 1 harm. The whole of the facts of the casd as 'elicited at the magisterial investigation have already been ; reported at full length in our columns, and as no additional Evidence was brought forward, we deem the) pale of hardly sufficient impor'i tance to reproduce it. At the conclusion of the case, the jury without leaving the box returned a verdict of ••Not Guilty," and .the accused was discharged. Before the rising of i the Court Mr Reid, as counsel for Mr W. M'Lean, applied for an adjournment of the case of Keoves v. M'Lean,' on the grbund that owing to "plaintiff having retained both tho resident' oounsel defendant had been placed at ! a dioadvantage, and had no time to instruct counsel. It was ultimately agreed that the case should stand adjourned until 6th Soptember next on the payment of £10 15s ' costs. The Court then adjourned. Mr Jtohn Conway, a gentleman ranting high as a cricketer in Victoria, has written a letter to a friend in Wellington stating that an Australian team will eve long visit Groat Britain, but before they do b6 it is not improbable that they may test the skill of Now Zealand Tjnights of the willow. The Niagara Falls Gazette gives an account of Jamea Wight, a gardener, being recently saved by the moreet chance from being carried away over the American fall. Mr Wight was engaged in clearing the ice from a tail in the rear of tho pump-houso below Wilmor's Mill, and tho ico on which he was standing gave Way, precipitating him into tho icy rapids. Tho current swept the bewildered man for below tho pump-house, but, fortunately, he was thrown against somo etationary shore ice, to which ho clung with decorate tenacity. Mr, Wight says ho had little hope "of being rescued, but he wanted liis friends tokno'w'wha't lidtl become' of him, and so called lustily for holp. Assistance, happily, was at hand and his rescuers, by joining bahus, succeeded ih reaching him, - and by tying a rope round liis bbdy they 'finally, after considerable 'effort, ' rescued 'the suffering man from his perilous posi- ■ tion. ' " ' '"' ' ' 1 The Wanganui Rifle Volunteer Company lias a crettlt balance of som'o £200, ai'jd'yct is reported to bo in a languishing and unsatisfactory cWdUion. An amtteing story hag reached us (Budget) from TJrenui. A'pai'ly (one man amongst 1 them being oh foot) were out looking for some missing cattle, which after a search" wero discovered amongst a herd of wild, cattle in a clearing in tho middle of the bush. Some' trouble was experienced in cutting tho tame animals out, and one of tho men sug« gosted driving them into the stockyard. Tho two who wore riding Went "off to open tho yard, immediately'bii which a bull, who had " spotted" the man 1 on foot, charged at him furiously. Ho tiin.de for a tree, but, in hi 8 fright; frilled; ! to climb, it, and as a last resource crawled under the bush while tho in» furiated bull'gored' the tree. The bull was ipuzzlM atehe man's 'disappearance, evidently ■considered tho tree as the cause, and accordingly did not' leave' it alone Until he had completely.taken it up' by tho tf&otfc. It is said that' the tree iri question was as thick as the man's thigh. '•** | The Taranaki Budget is responsible for. the .following :— | Ori 1 Suii'day last as the s.s. 'flawea vraa proceeding on her' way from Neloori to 'thisporti and when she was dfl Tatarimakaj |a pheasant was seen to fly from the shore as iif to beet tho steamer. It is evident that the pheasant knowing the sporting prbolivities of the captain of the steamer;' flew 6ut to sea to give hini a chance with' his guni'but ! which ho did not take 1 advantagb of. ' The pheasant after flying out about a quarter of a mile, ,dropped' : into' the sea and then 'swam townrda' tho shore,' when being seen by, Mr J. C. ' lTone'y field, ''' tie rode into the T)rodTcers a short distance, and' secured thebird. Tho Wellington correspondent of the Auckland Star, gWes as on dj6 tkat tho Governnient have invited in London competitive designs for a new ' uniform for civil servant?, grades to bo distinguished by the' number, of I buttons, plusb, 'and cockades. Major Atkin* asob his to wear a docked'hat with feathers. . llx.iPresident ' Grand and the ' Tu<'kis.h ITos"ts.--The Philadelphia Item says it has been positively assorted in Washington that ex-President Grant, while' 'ostensibly visting Europe for pleasure, is really to take command of tho' whole 'Turkish army against Itussia. The story is that England ' was instrumental in making this choice of a new commander for tho Sultan, in the hope that Grant's success would render her interferenco unnecessary. It is added that tho offor was brought to this country by tho ex-Prcsiclont's son-in-law," Mi 1 Sartoris, who with Fred. Grant is to bo on the General's staff. Finally, tho lattors's commission, it is said, dntes from May Ist, and his pay — threo months of which ho is to roooivo in ndvanco upon taking command—will bo largely increased should be succeed. Wo extract tho following paragraph from the Now Zonland Tablet :— " A young French Critholio. Count Gabriel do Croix de Saint Ayihour, had presented to tho Popo a complete flltar service of unheard of richos. Tho
vessels are pncrUated with diamonds, rubies, emeralds, topazoa, and all aorta of precious stones. It is said' Pius IX has accepted the offering on one condition, 'namely, that if the Queen of England' should ever turn to tho Cutholio faith, blig should bo considered worthy of being presented with this altar oeryice." ' ' ' Tho yield of gold from the Thamos fiold during June was 12,771 ounces from 6101---tons of quartz crushed. This was an ins crease of nearly 2000 ounces on the return for tho previous month. The Moanatairi Company obtained 42220zs in June. There wao also a number of small parcels obtained from the same mine by different parties of tributers. The London Fire Brigade.— During last years Captain Shaw reports, that thero wero 1781 alarms of fire, of which 1632 were well founded, 166 resulting in serious damago. These figures 'show an increase of 103 fires as compared with 1875, and an increase compared with the average of the ten preceding years. No fewer than 123 persons were seriously endangered by firo during the year 5 but of these 88 were saved, and only 35 lost their lives. A great victory for the ladies has been achieved in tho institution of the " Orleans Club" on the banks of the Thames, where, if the men havo their billiard-rooms aud cardrooms, their female' relatives havo their drawing-room (with a piano in it), their croquet lawn, their archery ground, and even I a meadow in which flower shows are to bo held. This movement .towards women's rights in the very highest circles will no doubt confirm tho privileges of tho sex as respects society. There are evon balls given afc this institution, so that the last barrier between the ladies and the lords may be said to be removed. It has long been known that an Englishman's house was his castle only in a very limitod jonse, and now even bis club will be no longer a sanctuary.
