BONUS FOlt GOLD-SAVING APPARATUS. nnUE Provincial Council of Otago being JL flwtirous of stinuthiting invention, &nd scouring the use ol gold saving apparatus in connection with hydraulic mining adapted to the purpose of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than any of the machines or methods at present in use, has voted the sum of £250, to bo offered as a bonus for the invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as his Honor the Superintendent may seem lit. Notice is hereby given in accordance with the vote of tlie Council, that plans and proposal* ioi? suoh an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till the first day of August next ensuing. The following particulars art) published for the information of intended exhibitor? of plans. Tho plans and proposals will bo submitted to a body of judges, composed of axporifiiiccd miners, and such other persons as his Honor the Superintendent may appoint, and in considering them tho following points i will hp kept ii^ view : — j 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plau, and its probable cost and toar and wear. 2. Tho readiness with which it can bo secured in any part of a tail race, and be removed from on» part to another and again scoured. 1 3. Its adaptability to the different ■widths and, fulls of tail races used in different districts ; to the varying quantities of water used either by choice or necessity for flushing tho same; and to the different kinds of washdirt from which gold is, obtained in tho Province. Inventors aro expected to bo conversant wjth the machines and methods at present in use, and not to offer simple reproductions of tho same. They are also expected not io offer reproductions of machines or methods which have fallen into disuse. They can obtain practical inforiuation on these and other points, by application through the post to the Central Mining Association at Nascby. If, in the opinion of tho judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy ot adoption by the miners in the Province, the Government undertakes to iurnish copies of the same to each of tho Mining Associations in the Province with full instructions us to inventions of the inventors, and the payment of the bonus will then be determined in the following manner, payment being due witLiin eight months from tho date at =/hich the copies of the plans aud instructions have been issued to the various Mining Associations. liy the fact of the apparatus being used by at least twenty-live sluicing companies iv tho Province, employing an averuge ot at least five men each, fjr tho period of six months, one l tho intention 6f tho same -companies to contiuuo ihe use thereof ; such fact and suth intention beii'g verified by tho affirmation befqro a Warden, of tho Managers or repi isentatives of bucli companies. In the event of two or more plans br ing considered worthy of trial, tho Government will determine in what manner tho competition shall be carried on, aud the best plan discovered.
