THE TURCO-HUSSIAN WAR. Wellington, August 4. The.Agent-Qeneral sends the following telegram :.?—. London, August %. The Turks repulsed the Russians at I?levna with great slaughter. Osman Pasha, the new commauder-in-chiof, and Mehem.it Ali are trying to effect a junction. A great battle is hourly expected near Tierno.va. The Russians aro making great efforts, as a further defeat would destroy communication with Gourke, south of the Balkans, and his force there would probably be destroyed, and th.c campaign concluded against Russia. Sinqapobe, August 3. After two days, of desperate #ghfcing at Plevna, the Russians were completely defeated, with a loss, of 8000 killed and 24,000 wounded. Austria is parly mobilising troops. Sydney, August 4.. A Herald's, special from Plevna says, tbe Russians'attack carried the first and second lines of tbe Turkish position, but they were subsequently driven back by a deadly fire from tbo Turkish, infantry. The Turks then advanced, and recaptured all the positions, slaughtering enormous numbers of Russians. The Russian forces consisted of five divisions of infantry, three brigades of cavalry, and one hundred and sixty guns. This defeat imperils tbe Russian position at Tirnovai, ;on the souths side of the Balkans. The Russians encountered Turkish forces under Sulinjo,n Bey and Redif Bey at Escki Sagra on Tuesday, and were repulsed, losing several guns.
