BONUS FOlt GOLD-SAVING A*PAHa.TUB. rpHE Provincial Council of Otago being X desirous of stimulating invention, and securing '.he use ot gold saving apparatus iv connection with hydraulic uiiniu" adapted to tho purpose of extracting gold from auriferous earth more completely than any of the machines or methods ut present in use, has voted tho sum of £250, to be offered as a bonus for the invention of such an apparatus, subject to such competition and regulations as bis Honor the Superintendent may seem fit. Notico is hereby given in accordance with the vote of the Council, that plans and proposal* for suoh an apparatus will be received for consideration, up till the first day of August next ensuing. The following particulars are published for the information of intended exuibitore of plans. The plans and proposals will be submitted to a body of judgeß, composed of experienced miners, and such other persons as his Honor tho Superintendent may appoint, und iv considering them the following poiuts will be kept in viow : — 1. The cost of the apparatus as it appears on the plan, and its probable cost and tear uud wear. 2. Tho readiness with which it can be secured in any part of a tuil race, and be removed from onu part to another and again Beoured. 3. Its adaptability to the different widths und fulls of tail races used in different districts 5 to tho varying quantities of water used either by choice or necessity for flushing the same ; and to the different kinds of washdirt from which gold is ot tamed in the Province. Inventors are expected to bo conversant with the machines und methods at present in use, and not to offer simple reproductions of tho same. They are also expected not to offer reproductions of machines or methods which have fallen into disuse. They can obtain pructical information on tjieee and other points, by application through the post to the Central Mining Association at Naseby. If, in the opinion of tho judges appointed any plan shall appear to be worthy of adoption by tho miners in the Province, tbe Government undertakes to furnish copies of the same to each of the Mining Associations in tbe Province with full instructions as to inventions of the inventors, and tho payment of the bonus will then be determined in tho following manner, puyment being due within eight months from the dute at which the copies of the plans and instructions have been issued to the various Mining Associations. By the fact of tho apparatus being used by at least twenty-five sluiuing companies iv tho Province, employing an average ot at least live mon each, f jr the period of six months, and tlie intention of tho same companies to continue die use thereof ; such fact und such intention being verified by the ailirmation before a Warden, of the Managers or repi esentatives of such companies. lv the event of two or more plans be ing considered worthy of trial, tho Government will determine in what munner the competition shall be carried on, aud the best plan discovered. As the bonus is only intended to itimulate inventive genius, every inventer may reap a further benefit from his iuveutiou if he think fit, by taking out a patent.
