TUBES IN LONDON STREETS.
The planting of trees in some of the principal thoroughfares of Loudon has long been talked of, and the Marylebonevestry baa just decided on effecting this improvement in Hamilton and Upper Hamilton Terrace, St John's Wood, thus converting the road into an avenue, at an estimated cost of £312, half of which umount to be hoped this course will be adopted before long with regard to other streets whiqh are wide enough for the purpose. Portland Place, for instance, would be immensely improved in appearance by a row of tree 3on either Bide. Bond street is unfortunately too narrow, and the trees would prove an additional obstruction to the traffic, already so much obstructed at times as to render travelling from one end of the street to the other almost as lengthy a procesa as a journey to Brighton by raiU Trees in, Bund street would, nevertheless, be an advantage to pedestrians, who by scip* ping from bough to bough like squirrels, might avoid the risk incurred when attempting to crots the carriage road on foot. Trees, are also much needed in Trafalgar square. About two years ago a timid experiment in this direction was made by temporarily depositing a fensmall trees in tubs on the aiphalte round the fountains. The effect, so far as it went, was decidedly good, hut one mornnig tubs and trees had 'disappeared, and no further attempt at sylvan scenery has since been made.— Pall Mall Mazette.
