THE UNITED STATES IN COMPARISON WITH AUSTRALIA.
When Dp Hector was at the Centennial Exhibition in Philidelphia he exhibited a map which had some novel features. Besides showing the boundaries of the Australian Continent, including West and South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, and the adjacent islandg, nimbers are placed in the centre of plan of each indicating the area, the railroad and telegraph lines, imports, exports, expenditure, export of gold, andnumbsr of population- This expedient gives at ■i glance the most interesting information that a visitor would demand, Brother Jonathan was not long before he made a discovery wh.ioh he thought impossible and astonished him very much. He could not believe it, and after he discovered it was possible he would not. He had been in the habit, during the period of hia natural life, and a little beyond, of boasting that he possessed the largest territory in the world, and that nothing could beat the States in respect to climate, products, or extent of possession. This map proves boyond doubt, that while the area of the Australian Continentalone is 1,994.341,044 acres, or 3,110.000 square miles, not reckoning Tasmania and New Zealand. New Zealand is about 100,000 square miles, and Tasmania 27,000. Including the whole of the islands, the Australian territory is shown to be in excess of the figures set down for the United State*. So Brother Jonathan m this matter has I been '• whipped. "—New Zealand H.era.l4*
