* [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [PER PRESS AdSOCIATIpN.] Chbistchurch June, 26th. In, the Supreme Court to*day, the appeal of Reginji v. Barrett came on for hearing. Barrett is a publican at Christchurch, and was fined some time ago for not paying the fee for what the magistrate termed an extra bar. The so called bar was a sort of balf door in a tap room ; and defendant's counsel being of opinion tbat only those bars opening direct on the street came within. tb_? definition of the word "bar" as nsed in the Licensing Act, appealed against the decision of the magistrate. After long argument to«day, tbe matter was re« ferred back to the magistrate's court for ,a re-statemgnt of the case, but Judge Johnstori expressed himself to the effect tbat a bar must open direct on to tbe street before a license fee under the Act can b§ dQmanded for it. June 28. > The case at the Luna.iq Asylum has been confirmed. It caused a great seusation here. The particulars are as follows : — After having dinner yesterday, Ererderick White, one of the principal warders, proceeded to the kitchen. Mark Price, an inmate, Boon, after came and asked White for his keys. White said he hiiu given them to another warder. Price immediately picfied up a carving knife which was lying on the table, and stubbed White just below the h.art. The force of the blow was ro great that the knife entered White's body its full length. White died about twenty minutes, afterwards. I'rice, who bas been an inmate of the Asylum fourteen years, was considered perfectly harmless, and was allowed complete liberty both in and about the Asylum. White has been warder for several years, und was highly respected
j by all wbo knew him. It is i p,; known [ what Brice's object was in asking for f White's keys. There had been a quarrel between the tvvo men previously. Another warder waa in the kitchen when the sad event occurred, but had no opportunity of preventing it. Auckland, June 28. Sir George Grey has completely recovered his health. The Insurance Companies are considering a new tariff. | In view of water supply, the City Council has decided to fix the level of I all streets not yet surveyed.
