THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 1877.

Reepton .has worn an unusually busy aspect during, the past week and business people begin to regard spring and summei' prospects with high, hope. There fs no clpubj; tbat the prpspects of the different mines are highly encour-aging-t-more so probably tban tbey j ever have, afc any other period of the districts growth. There seetns every likelihood tbat the approaching spring will fiu|:l the district ma most flourisba ing condition, as having now quite recoyeretf i from .tbe depression induced by the pressure of tbe banks some time ago, mining, generally is being carried on upon a much better footing. Directors of companies are chary in availing, themselves, of large overdrafts ■from the banks, aud though progress may in consequence be slower, ifc is eminently surer. Another satisfactory feature of our present position is, that we bave, in all probability, heard the last of the compulsory windiug up of misbappened yentures. The enormous cqst as sbown of winding up through tbe intervention of the Court has worked a salutary, though severe, lesson to shareholders, and, there is, we think, but little fear that those who may be unfortunate enough to become so involved will permit of such an extremity in the future. Upon th* whole, then, we shall be much surprised if, during the current balf year, the district does not advance with giant strides. . The dividends regularly be« ing paid by the Hopeful, Fleece, Energfe_.c and Wealth of Nations Companies are stirring up a lively outside faith in the stability and resources of the field, and the natural good result of tbis is now rrjaking. itself felt here. The opening of dray communis cation witb Westport is also an im; portant step in fchd) right direction* and if, as is now generally said, we, sball by tbat route have cheaper freights than by the Orey line,, the advantage will be considerable. ,Now that the road is open we might very reasonably ask for more frequent postal communication between here.apd Westport. This, however, is a matter wbicb will 1 rip doubt force itself io due course of time, and with a daily coach running north and south, and tire two seaboard towns in competition for, the trade of the place, we may feel satisfied with our lot.
