ItftfOßMATrox has been received by the County Council from tbe Colonial Secretary to the effect that tbe Grey road vote having Jnpsed, the amount will require to be re-voted by Parliament before it can be appropriated. This caonot but be regarded aa a most unfortunate circumstance, as it means, at the best, that the money, in the ordinary course of' events, wi'l not be available until, at the earliest, tbe latter part of tbe ye.ar. Parliament Will prdjbably. meet early in the incoming month, but the session ia likely to be an extremely busy and possibly prolonged one, so that there will be a long delay appears inevitable, la this emergency ifc will be for tbe Council to consifler whether or not it would be justified in hypothecating the vote. No doubt tha Council could obtain* some form of assurance from tbe General Government that the promised sftbsidy will be forthcoming at the close of the session, and, in the meantime, no difficulty would, we think, be experienced in finding per* sons willing to undertake the work upon deferred payment. It seems to us that; unless tbe Council elects this course, or decides to cast in favor of Westport, and use every possible effort towards completing dray com* muaicntion with that place, the progress of this district during tbe ensuing six months will be seriously checked. We have unmistakeable evidences on nil sides that tbe district is now on the eve of another extensive rush, and the Council will, we think, err seriously if ifc does not deal with this matter with becoming energy. In any case, we are day by day realising more keenly* the necessity of an alternate dray route to Westport. There can be no question that the inhabitants of Reefton no less than those of Weafcport have been " vigorously lazy" over this matter, and regarded from any light it reflects but little credit I upon the enterprise of either. However, it ia necessary now that somes thing sharp and decisive should be done, and whether that something be in the direction of Westporfc or Greytnouth, or both, is a matter for the earliest consideration of the Conncil.
The District Court will sit at 10 o'clock this morning, when the list of contributors in the matter of the liquidation of ibe Eainy Creek Gold Mining Company, will bo p:*e» sented by the liquidator for EoUlo.uont by tbe Cdutt. Ihere are, we beliave, upwards of forty qpntrihutories, but it is probable that many of tbofo will oppose. His Honor ! Judge Weston reached Reefton by coach on Fr'day evening. 3ho quarterly meeting of the Eeefton Branch of the Hibernian Society wa3 held on Satu v day evening last at Williams' E all. The officers appointed for the ensuing term were s Preeidont, Mr P. Butler } Vicc-Presideut, Mr E. Reiilyj Treasurer, Mr W. Williams; Secretary, Mr J. Deehanj Warden, Mr M. Fcehan; and Guardian, Mr T. Moore* The Committee of the M'Gil T icuddy Polief Fund met yesterday afternoon, M. J. Dcchsn in the chair. The Secrelavy, Mr M'3be»jr, : announced that the whole of tbe lists had not yet been returned, bat those still outstanding would be reutrncdin the course of a few days. The amount vi hand was £193, and it was agreed to hand over to Mr M'Gillicaddy£l9o at once, and the balance as soon 89 the lisls are published. In another column we publish the letter of our Kumars correspondent. It appears that mining matters there are not by any means in a flourishing condition, and as for tbe business people it would seem they are now occupied, , as it would be nautically expressed, in " haul* ing in the slack." It may, however, be that the depression there will only be temporary, J and that, something after the fashion of Reefton, tbe place will rise from the quietude like a giant refreshed. The ordinary half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of the Hopeful Company was held at M? Breonaa's office on Wednesday eveuhg last, The Directors' report ond balance sheet, a3 a 1 so the Mining Manager's report, were read end unanimously adopted. The operations for th« haH-jes* were shown to have beea highly succosafa 1 , close upon £10,000 having bean distributed in dividends during that perioS. The whole amount of dividends declared up to that data waß £27.500. The directors elected fo? the ensuing half-year were Messrs J. Dowling, E. E. Gulline, T. Dcegrn, F. Walker, md J. Williams. Mc3sra Eayfeild aud Poits wore re -appointed auditors, Welcome scrip cont'nue in great demajd at steadily advancing rates, and as an investmeat seems to rank well with itj next door neighbor, the Hopeful. A la-ge number of persons visited the Welcome miae on Friday and Saturday last, arid wero surprised at the appearance presented, lho reef oa tbo No. 4 (Hopeful) lerel shows a thickness of 3ft 6<n and the show of gold is said to be ma^nlQ" cent.
