f bom an estimate which we publish elsewhere^ it will be seen that the cost of constructing that portion of the (jrey road between Devery's Terrace and the Junction of. the Grey rivers, is likey to be* much heavier than was at first supposed. The amount promised by the General Government towards the work in, we believe, £5000, but we are informed this is £1600 short of the sum orignaHy promised, and the Council bas a vague hope of being able to secure the Idrger amount. In nay case, however, there must be a considerable deficit which, no aoubt, the County Council will have fo provide for. Where the money foi this purpose is to come from it is not easy to divine, but that it will hare to be forthcoming is certain, even though the Council should be driven in consequence to live upon short commons for the remainder of the financial year. Possibly the Council maj see its way to make those who nee the road contribute something directly towards the cost of maintenance. It would only be fair to the ratepayers of the County, that some such course should be taken. As it, is those who use the road most are nonresidents — in fact ratepayers of another County, and there is no* valid reason why they should not be called upon to *' pay their footing." There are num» bers of persons living along the road who no doubt would be glad to pur* chase the right of collecting the toll, and in the face of. the small black cloud, though it be " no bigger than' fl man's hand," which threatens the finance of the County, we strongly enmmend tbis proposal to the Coun-
