Messrs Fitzmaurice and M'Shorry placed & gang of men at work repairing the Saddle road on Monday last. Yesterday being Queen's Birthday, the residents made a feeble attempt to keop holiday, but only half tho business places were closed. The town wore an unusually quiet aspect, and save the football match no description of out-door amusement was indulged in. By a rather awkward printer's mistake the . Energetic dividend declared on Monday last ; was stated in our advertising columns to be sixpence per share, whereas it should havo been six shillings per share. The prospects of tho mine are said to bo at the presonttime : hardly second to any in the field. Tho danger of allowing young childron to romp in Broadway in tho vicinity of the boarded footwalk was illustrated yesterday, when a little girl fell off tho planking info the creek, a distance of about ten feet. A good volume of water was running down at the time, and had not tho accident been witnessed 1 and assistance readily at hand, it is very probable that the child would havo boon carried down and drowned. It is to be hoped that the County Council will delay no longer in framing a sot of byelaws for the County. Numberless nuisances now existing, call for instant suppression. Most of the County Councils of the Colony are ahead of the Inangahua in this respect, having framed and gazetted bye-laws months ago. A committee of the Council, as we believe, been appointed for this purpose, but it docs not appear that any action has yet been takon in tho matter. Tho football match arranged to be played on Qucon*s Birthday, duly carao off in Smith's Paddock, yesterday. Tho weather.was not very favourable, the heavy rain of the preceding week having rendered the ground not only unsuitable but clangorous. Sides having been, selectod by Messrs Butlei? and Hitghoa, captains of the Club, tho game was kept up with great spirit until nightfall, each side having scored but one goal. The match was therefore a draw. Several ugly " spills " occurred which- were taken with commendable good humour, and all' passed of merrilly. The result of tho JFusl-in-Time crushing,, though not quite up to oxpoctations indulged in at the outset, has nevertheless taken a great many" of the " knowing, ones" by surprise, ds something like a '* funk " had been established by somo of the shareholders dim ing the last fnrnighfc of the crushing. Tho declaration of a one shilling dividend by fcho directors was, a wehsome tiding for tho pati nt shareholders, the bulk of whom, wo aro glad to learn, reside in the Inangnhua. The amount divided was £1400, which, addcJ to £5600, disbursed on a formor occasion, brings the Company's total divided profit up to £7000> Tho mine shows abundant itono and there is every likelihood of the period' 1877-8 being a highly propitious one for tho shareholders. The County Council met on Wednesday last, lut tho business disposed of wa» of a merely formal character. The question of the estimated ineomo was brought under discus* sion. The amount as formorly estimated was only a trifle over £7000, but by very largely stretching out the item of anticipated' receipts ftom gold duty a sum of £11,640 was arrived at as representing tho expected revenue for the current year. The gold duty is no doubt a very elastic one, and there is a strong probability that during tho ensuing nine months the gold yield of the district will be something extraordinary; possibly, therefore, the Council may not have based tho estimate upon that head too high. Notice of motion was given to move at the next meeting of the Council that on overseer and engineer be appointed at salary of £300 per annum. Brisk speculating in Hopeful shares has been going on during tho past few days, and sales have reached as high as £6. The company's mine is said to present a magnificent appearance. The winze being sunk on No 4 level continues to carry on excellent body of rich stone, and the position and character of tho reef gives abundant indication of tho stone living down to a great depth. Good as the prospects of the Hopeful mine undoubted • ly those of the Welcome mine adjoining ranks upon equal footing, and tho companies will shortly meet for tho purpose of arranging terms for tko purchase and erection of a battery for joint uso. The quantity of stone now proved to exist in the Hopeful mine, renders it absolutely imperative that this company should make immediate provision for extended crushing power, and there is at length every likelihood of this long contemplated step upon tho part of the latter company being at length taken. A peculiar case was hoard at tho Charleston Court tho other day. One Peter Murphy by some means got hold of a blank summons form, and filled it up as a snmmons for debt, and got it served on Edward Murphy, adding to tho amount of debt 11s fees and 23s mileago. Mr Herbert Cross, Doputy Clerk of tho Court, then luid an information against tho aforesaid Peter Murphy for forgery. Most encouraging accountSi says tho Rosa Guardian, havo been received from tho Totara Quartz Mining Company's claim, Donnelly's Greek. On Thursday a body of stone one foot thick, and showing good gold, was struck about thirty feet from the surface. The quartz is not solid, but, the back and front walls are perfectly firm. Mr Shields, the manager, is quite sanguine that a solid body of stone will be struck at a lowr level..
The yield of gold at the Koh-i-noor Company's claim, Redman's, is improving: On Thursday and Friday last, says the Boss Guardian, the result each day exceeded seven ounces, better ground having been met with in the drives towards the rivor. Of tho six faces— two are situated in tho direction of Italian Gully, two towards Black's Creek, and the other two noav the river. Mv Edwards, the manager, could easily open up four more faces, but he complains of a difficulty io ob* taining practical miners.
