The decision given by Mr Warden Shaw yesterday, in reference to the application of the Walhalla Company, for three months protection of mining leases ia one ofvery great importance to the leaseholders of this district. According to Mr Shaw's ruling a mining lease comes within the denomination of a " claim '* within the meaning of section of the Nelson Goldfields Regulation^ and is consequently entitled to be treated in precisely the same manner aa an ordinary alluvial claim. The ruling ia important as affording to leaseholders under peculiar circumstances a species of relief not hitherto enjoyed. We have no intention whatever of questioning the soundness of Mr Warden Shaw's ruling upon the law, but in view of the novelty of the point no less than the great interests which would be staked by an implicit following of it, we cannot help thinking that directors of companies would be wise in availing them" selves of the boon with extreme caution. We all know something of the " glorious uncertainty of the law," and leaseholders in, availing themselves of the protection might, if not place their property in actual jeopardy, at least expose themselves to long and costly litigation.
