Tee members of the Road Board met at the office, Broadway, yesterday, there being present Messrs Brennan, Aiken, Kelly, and Pavies. The Secretary, pursuant to instructions, produced a copy of the specifications of last year's maintenance contracts, which were read over carefully and altered and amended as found necessary. It was decided to compel the successful tenderers for future iaain-. tenance contracts to find substantial sureties to, the amount of twenty-five pep cent upon the contract price. A special provision was unanimously agreed upon, making it a condition of the Saddle contract that the road shall be metalled throughout to a depth of nine inches within the period of three months from the signing of the contract. Tenders for the work will be called at once, to close within a fortnight of the present time. Tenderers are to be invited to furnish an estimate for merely keeping the roa,d in repair at its present width and alao for widen* ing it throughout to the extent of five feet. The contracts will be let for a period of two years instead of one as heretofore, and this will no doubt act aa an additional inducement to the eon* tractor to perform his work faithfully. It is intended to prepare the specifications with great care, and to exact their literal fulfilment. The Board is to be commended for the prompt manner in which it has dealt, rather late in the day though it may be, with th,is ali important matter.
