Great excitement has been caused at Minneapolis, Minn., through Miss Kiss Noonau mortally wounding Mr W. H. Sidle, a bank clerk. She shot him because he had seduced and deserted her. An Auckland paper has hit upon an expedient by which it says County Councils may have all the powers of bor« rowing without the attendant pains. Empower them, says he, to issue county scrip, with which they could pay ail their contractors and all their accounts, such scrip being a legal tender for the paymeat of county rates. The New Zealand limes suggests that the subscribers to our contemorary should initiate the system forth • with, and demonstrate itshappmess by paying their quarterly bills in Uu> delightful currency, just to see how it answers, as a preparatory step towards more general adoptioa. The Lyttelton Times says Dr Buller has been Visiting the Lake country in the North Island, where he has collected a large amount of valuable information relative to wonderful natural features and re* ! sources of that district. The hot springs, he states, are fast becoming a place of fashionable resort for invalids in search
of health and tourists in search of change of novelty. Bathing in these springs his a wonderful effect in developing the appetite, and works a salutary chnnge in the case of tlio dyspeptic. A considerable number of visitors from Melbourne, Canterbury, Auckland, and Wellington were Staying at the hotel there. It is reported that tho House of Commons will be fisked this year to vote a large sum for the construction of tho chain of forts which ig to bo built in tbo vicinity of Chatham for the defrneo of the dockyard, the Medway, and the London approaches, The works are to bo under the direction of tho Commanding Royal Engineer ofthe Chatham District. Ono of the forts is already tmdor construction at Borsted, near Rochester, and another will be built at Cookham, also near Rochester, the work being carried out by convicts. There will be seven forts alto* getber, but it will be seyeral years before they are completed, as they will be very massive, and will be armed with heavy artillery.
