Stdset, April 18. News via Torres Straits from China reports thai thousands are suffering through famine. The seyerest priva^ tion is at Kaugsu. Through the famine rice has risen to famine prices. Disputes are becoming greater. The relief is lamentably insufficient, and the people are reduced to the last stage of emaciation and exhaustion, and are dying by thousands daily. Satazuna. —The rebellion at Japan is more serious than was at first anticipated, but tbe rebels are dispirited by defeat. Two thousand Chinese troops being dissatisfied broke loose and left camp, but were followed and a large number killed. Sidney, April 19. The steamer Bowen arrived yesterday at Cooktown with orer five hun- { dred Chinese. The steamer G-illy Lome is now in quarantine, and has over a thousand Chinese aboard, and provisions are running short. n fl ■iiii hi
