In a recent issue in referring to tbe origin of the fire in Broadway, we attributed tbe outbreak to ca elessness on the part of some person or persons occupying the building. We hare since been informed that the fire was not the result of carelessness, the explanation offered being as follows:— The ocou« pant of the building after cooking his tea, ox* tinguished the fire, and retired down town, leaving no light or fire in the building. He was in Lower Broadway when the alarm was given, and can only account for the fire by supposing that a epark from the chimney ignited the shingles, which after smouldering for some hours finally burst into flame. Amongst the recent additions and improvements made to tbe Wealth of Nations machinery, is the erection of four berdans. The berdans were turned out at the Dispatch Foundry Works, G-reyraouth, and the material and workmanship reflects the utmost credit upon the manufacturers. The Wealth of Nations Company are now reaping a substantial weekly revenue from the savings of the berdang, the result being even more satisfactory than was expected. The Just-in-Time Company have also followed the example of the Wealth of ITations in the erection of berdans, the latter being also of Greymouth manufacture. The cricket match between ihe All-England "Eleven and Twenty-two of the Westland cricketers was commenced yesterday. The Englishmen went to the wickets fir3t and scored 119. When the stumps were drawn two local wickets were down for 1 run.
