THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, FEBRUARY, 12, 1877.
The Rev. Mr Douglas, of Greymouth, lectured in Dawson's Hall, on Friday evening last, the subject chosed by the j reverend lecturer being " The Essential Distinctions between Man and Brute." The room was pretty well filled, and the proceedings were opened with a prayer and hymn, after which the lecture was proceeded with, and was listened to throughout with marked interest and attention, and at its conclusion a vote of tbanks to the lecturer was carried unanimously. A telegrams this morning contain an item of intelligence which is well calculated to create- a feeling of alarm, not only in the immediate locality of its occurrence but over the wbole of the West Coast. We need hardly say we refer to the outbreak at Hokitika of what appears to be a very malignant type of scarlet fever. There is no doubt that the authorities there will take all necessary precautions to as far as possiblo prevent the spread of the infection, but even this assurance will not allay the uneasiness which the presence of such a dreadful scourge gives rise to. Of the nature of the precautions taken w« shall probably hear more in the course of a few days. The Lenten Pastoral just issued by Bishop Redwood to the clergy and laity of His Lordship's diocese strictly enjoins Catholic parents against sending their children to otber tban Catholic school**. Upon the subject of mixed marriages his Lordship recommends that such unions should be strongly discouraged. During the recent flood a portion of the southern bank of the Inangahua river was carried away exposing a slab box containing human remains deposited there in the early days of the Inangahua. A portion of the rude coffin has been torn away by the flood, and but for the sand and mud which has been deposited over theire- \ mains they would be exposed to view. The next thing we may hear is that the remains have been disturbed by foraging animals. Public decency and public sentiment alike demand that steps should at once be tuken in this matter, The charitably disposed of th? Inauga**
hua will be appealed to to-diy on behalf of John M'Gillicuddy, the victim of the recent mining accident at the Alexandra mine, Boatmans. The case is one of peculiar distress.
