A VINDICATION. [ro THE EDITOB INAN3AHCA TIMES.] Sib,— Would you kindly allow rae space in your columns to refute a statement which went forth to tiie public through the Inangahua Press during the hearing of the case cf the Sir Juiius Yogel mine at the late sitting of tbe District Court. Now, sir, I am very sorry to trouble you, but I mu3t in justice to myself rebut what was then laid to my charge. Mr M'Lean (the Liquidator) during the hearing on oath said—" I asked him (M'Shain) if he bought shares on the one day, and oa the the same day took shares as a dummy, and he said he did and would. I asked him if he would swear to that fact, and he said he would swear to anything.'* Now Mr Editor, I give this evidence a flat denial, and Mr M'Lean in asserting such swore falsely. You may think my language strong, sir, but then you must remember that I have a reputation to preserve as well (and which is as dear to me) as Mr M'Lean. I have been a resident of the district for a period of six years, and during that time I defy anyone in it to say that I have ever performed a dishonourable action, or used language expressing such sentiments as those put into my mouth by Mr M'Lean, With your permission I will relate the cnly two conversations which took pace between us in reference to the Sir Julius Yogel. The first was this— l met Mr L. Davies in tbe street, and him and I went to M'Lean's ofE,*e. Mr Davies then said, in my presence, that I had acknowledged that I did not hold the scrip bona fide, to which I gave a thorough assent. The second was as follows— On*"* G "nnd*iy morn., ing Mr M'Lean came to Willi-imV Hotel (where I was staying) aod asked tor me. I met him at the hotel door, and he said, " How about those shares M'Shain ; will you swear you did not buy the 1000, scrip ?" I replied, " Certainly I did not buy them.'' He then asked if I would swear I bought Bayfeild's 500 scrip, and I answered " Certainly, I will." M'Lean then left, and when a few paces distant he said, " You will swear black for one and white for the other," There were several witnesses standing on tbe verandah at the time who heard the whole of the conversation, and who can testify as to the veracity of what I now assert. I would ask then w is is; not a most cowardly act for a mm iioldiiu the posit-on Mr M'Lean does, to attempt to blacken and deface a nun's character (nnd more especially a working man's) in a public Court inthe way be has done mine. Had bat given anything lik« a fair statement of what took place I would not have ob** j -cted, bat I must now reiterate r^atn that he swore deliberate falsehoods. One word more and I '".ave done. Mr M'Lean has endeavored to blast my character by asserting what was false, and I now call upon him, if he has the spirit or the pluck of a gentleman, to recall what he advanced knowing to be false. Trusting you will pardon me for occupying so much of your valuable space, I remiin, Sir, Yours respectfully, Andkew M'Shain.
