MISCELLANEOUS NEWS.

A plan bas been started at Madrid for constructing an Inter-continental Tunnel, to unite Europe and Africa by a tunnel under the Straits of Gibraltar, It is proposed that it should start from a point between Tarifa and Algesiras on the Spanish coast, and come out between Centa and Tangiers on the African coast, The submarine part of the tunnel would be only nine miles long, bat with. u| incline of 1 in 100. The tunnels of approach would be nearly six miles long, on each side. The maximum depth of there* at this point is said to be 3000 ft., and as a "crust" of 300 ft, is to be left between the bottom of the sea and the arch of the tunnel, the latter will hare to be 3000 ft. below the level of the sea. The originator* of the scheme are of opinion that the cost will not exceed £4,000,000 sterling, and they argue that, with this tunnel and that between Dorer and Calais open, them would be an ererland route from London to India without change of callage, if desired !
