SEVERE GALES AND LOSS OF LIFE IN ENGLAND.
Tbe Pall Mall Gazette of November. 17 says :— The cold of last week has been succeeded by wet, sultry weather, and on tbe coast there have been severe and destructive gales. On Saturday night a portion of the end of Bournmouth pier, about five yards in, length was washed away. On Sunday morning the Whitestable brig Vulcan, drove ashore south of the Gorleston Pier, Yarmouth. The crew weresave4 by means of the rocket apparatus. At Aerwick on the same day a large schooner foundered with all hands. During the night considerable damage was done to both piers at the mouth of the Tyne, about 200 ft of staging at the North Pier having been carried away, and nearly 30 yards of railway from the South Pier. In Scotland the weather has been very bad. On Mon* day a strong easterly gate swept the Firth of Forth all day, and so violent was the storm that a large number of smail boats at anchor, in harbor were wrenched from their moorings ami driven out to sea. Nearly 3OO.vegrffc took refuge in the roads of thej^^ of Forth, including several *Tfafge steamers. On the same day the.lnsu* land, a Norwegian barque, was wrecked at a wild, un'rjquented part of the north-east coast, called Fox., holes, about eight miles from Hartlepool,and of her crew ot nine person*
