THE Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1877.

The Bank of New South Wales, Greymouth invites tenders, to close on the 17th inst , /or tbe erection of bank premises in Reefton. The sittings of the District Court will commence on Monday next, l§th inst., before his Honor Judge Weston. ffhe principal case for hearing is an action for damages for false imprisonment, by John Williams, of Fern Flat, against Edward Shaw, Esq , Besi» dent Magistrate, and Sergeant Neville. Mr Staite will appear for the plain ti/f, and Mr Newion for the defence. The election of Mr Tames M'Laughlin, for the Ahaura Biding, has been declared void. A subscription has been started in aid of widow and orphans of the late Peter Campbell. We are informed tb&t the family of the deceased has been left without the slightest provision of any kind. Messrs M'Gaffin, Oxley, Shanks, and Campbell have been appointed to receive subscriptions from town residents. Talking of the projected cricket match be« tween the Ueyfton and Grey month teams, | it would appear that the latter has no ne» cessity to go far afield for a foem an worthy of j ita steel. At a recent match betyeen tbe first eleven of Greymouth and an equal number of the coal-heavers of Brunnerton, the latter proved the victors by thirty-nine runs. The valuers appointed by the County Council to complete the assessment are settling down diligently to their work and there is no reason to doubt tßat the roll for tbe en • tire district will be ready by the prescribed time. Messrs M'Sherry and' Deehan, the town valuers, have already completed the raring of a considerable portion of the Biding, and it is satisfactory to learn that both on their' part and that of Messrs Hankin an(J Gellespie, the greatest care is being exercised in theperformanoe of their duties. The as> sessoient being based upon the revised roll of la?t year, the work is attended with little difficulty, and can afford little scope for subsequent disoonteut amongst the ratepayers. lv another column we publish the balancesheet of the Hospital Fete Committee, which shows that the aggregate receipts were £259 4s 6d, of which sum £93 18s 6d wa. raised by public subscription. The chief item of disbursement was, of course, the stake money, which, it will be seen, nearly squalled the total sum contributed directly by the public. It may be said that the Fete really accomplished next to nothing, as nearly the full amount of the nett proceeds was subscribed at the outset of the movement, but it must be borne in mind that the Fete Committee had to create an attraction tp the town for 'the holidays, otherwise their call for doj nations would not hare been so liberally met j and thi's could only be accomplished by offering an inducement to visitors, in the Way of prize-money. Taking, therefore, all things into account, the Committee has been successful even beyond what conld have been reasonably expected. At the final meeting of the Committee, held on Monday last, the question of remunerating tbe secretary was suggested, but Mr M'Sherry declined to ac- ! cept payment in any form, whereupon a vote of thanks for bis services was carried unani. mously. On tbe whole the Fete Committee way be fairly congratulated upon the successful out-come of their exertions. The funeral of the late Peter Campbell took place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday last, all classes of the community joining in the cortege, which was one of the most lengthy we lV.ve witnessed. Ihe brethren of tbe Heather Bell Lodge, of which deceased was a member, fluttered in great namber, and their appearance in the mourning regalia of tbe order was very impressive, %i funeral oSce waj per.

formed by the Rev. Mr. Worboys, and was followed by tbe service of the Society. Tbe election for the Antonio's Riding is likely to bring together a numerous field of candidates. It will be seen that Mr A. Beard, an old resident of the Antonio's district, has definitely decided to offer himself, as also has ait D. Duncan. Besides these two local men it is not unlikely that the electors there will have their choice extended on the polling day by the advent cf one or more candidates from Reefton. Application has, we bolieve, been made for the cancellation of the lease of the Little Boatman's Creek Company, Boatman's. Some time ago the company in lieu of forfeiture on an application for eanceLatior:, was fined in a certain sum of money, which, however, was not paid within the stidulated' time. It is for this reason, wa understand, that the applies* tion has been lodged. The present holders of the ground ha?e expended a considerable sum of money hi prospecting it, and the last contract let by tbe company exceeded £100, and was only completed in the latter part o last month. The company will take all requisite steps to oppose the applio tion. In the course of the next few "days the in« habitants of the Icangabua will have an opportunity of attending what is reputed to be one of the most legitimate entertainments yet presented to the West Coast public. The name of Mr George Cotterell and Miss Isabella Carandini (Mrs Cotterell) will be familiar to the majority of our readers, both lady and gentleman having visited the West Coast some years ago. The company is an» nounced to appear in Reefton on Tuesday next, and we trust that they will be accorded the fullest encouragement. One more reference to the Crushington election and we shall have done with it. We stated in our last issue that Mr Wardep Shaw did not reach Reefton in time to take the necessary affidavit on the petition against the Crusbington election. We did not think it necessary tt the time to go into minutiee, but some people are so dull. Mr Shaw arrived in Reefton after office hours on Wednesday, On the following day the County Council sat, and Mr Shaw was engaged at the opening. After the Council rose Mr Davies left Reef i on. Wo have his assurance that he did not leave " suddenly," as we stated, possibly not. Indeed, for aught we know to the contrary, he may noi have left Reefton at all, but it was represented that he was remark* ably " scarce " during that particular after* noon, and to these circumstances — inability to take the required affidavit and the absence of the candidate— is to be ascribed the fact that the proceedings fell through. Mr pavies would seemingly have it believed that he did not leave the town to ??ade the service and people will, no doubt, believe him fully, Hia we do. There has evidently been a mistake over the whole mutter, and it has, in a great measure, been brought about by a per* haps too rigid adherence on our part to the current fallacy that two and two make four. It seemo to us tliat one simple denial would have sujHced in t£e matter. As an instance of the confidence which down country people h >ye in investments in thia field, when directed by responsible hand 8, we may mention that the whole of the avail* able shares in the Anderson's Extended Company were subscribed for on Monday last, in Q-reymouth and Hokitiia, the share-list numbering tbe most substantial business residents of each town. By a happy coincidence the reef was struck in the company's mine on the day following the tllotment of the shares, and as matters stand at present the " show " is a really firsUclaas one. Our mining reporter j visited the mine yesterday, by request, and j Itis report will be found under the usual head' ing-
