CARPENTERS SOLID AS A ROCK.

Perhaps the most insidious attempt to frustrate the efforts of the strikers, and incidentally to weaken the position maintained in Auckland since the strike began, was made by one Hazel, of Wellington, at the Carpenters’ and Joiners meeting on Monday night. This gentleman (?), who is a member of the Executive of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners’ for New Zealand, came to Auckland

with a proposal that £250 should be donated to the strike funds, all the carpenters should retiirn to work, and a levy of 21 per Cent, for married men, and 5 per cent, for single men be made to help the strikers. An intensely interesting and enthusiastic meeting was the result, the Auckland boys strongly resenting anything of such a nature at this time of day, and almost to a man turned the proposal down. Three members made brief speeches to the strikers outside the Trades Hall, each one emphatically declaring that they were going to stick in the fight till it was won —and won honourably. Here’s to the spirit that impregnates the men who refuse to be hoodwinked by potential strike breakers! That spirit will win out!
