Auckland I.W.W.
Local 1, though temporarily attenuated, has been busy, as usual, during the month. The local has lately lost' many good members. Victimisation is a factor. Three went to the King Country to study the sciences, including sociology (road) metallurgy, and, incidentally, entomology. Four had to pull out through becoming fish and' bottle merchants. Another (FellowWorker By-Law, a spittoon embellisher) has left for the Bluff to see if strikes really are to be left undeservedly in the hands of the executive, or' whether the strike clause is misprinted. Two others have left “the Dominion," one for the Never-Never, the other for the Old Ark (to inquire’ into the sex question). Several other fellow-workers have humped the bluey out of Auckland. The foregoing includes an ex-secretary, an ex-manager of the “ 1.U." an ex-assistant-editor, and several good soap-boxers. Theses losses, coming together and coinciding with extra heavy publishing, rent, and other expenses, are a severe blow, which nearly put the paper and the local into difficulties. In face of this ; adversity the active minority is rising to the occasion, and, if the local's wild and woolly democracy will rally round, we will soon show a better record than ever, and beat every local south of the* Line; so sffiile, damn you! and come to light. Our record for the month is: Two ordinary and one “special" indoor meetings; an average of two-a-week outdoor, extra good literature and paper sales; and an issue of 2,000 of a new leaflet. Drastic retrenchment has been necessary, and the local moved to the top floor (same building), so rebels blowing in from their country seats' will find the room nearer Heaven, and a bit smaller. —John Henry Dubb.
