The N.Z. Government Labour Department issues a monthly bulletin on the state of the slave market. The last issue reported a scarcity of labour in the building trade. The various labour unions concerned have denied such scarcity, and have produced figures which show that in almost every department there are many more men than jobs. No doubt the Labour Department acted” on information supplied by the employers, who have special reasons for attracting workers to Auckland. An unemployed army is useful in the prevention of strikes.
Hie trade mmons foster a a state of affairs which allows one set of workers to be pitted against another set of workers in the same industry. ■ ; .
