LACKING IN DIET

SAILORS NEEDED VITAMIN C

'MAINTAINING DENTAL HEALTH

Years ago. when early voyages of discovery were made, sailors suffered from scurvy, a disease which affected teeth, gums and skin. Lack of vitamin C was the cause.

To-day many mothers are busy making rose-hip syrup, as the value of vitamin C in a young child’s diet is well known. Although it is only in the last three years that it has come to the notice of health - minded

mothers, rose-hips are now an inexpensive source of vitamin. C, and full use is being made of this knowledge, says a statement by the Thames Dental Clinic.

Vitamin C is contained in all fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those which are either yellow or orange in colour. When these are included regularly in the diet, resistance against infection is being built up.

The blood-stream fights infection for us, and if this is kept clear by vitamin C, health is maintained.

A clear blood stream keeps up the tone of the tissues, and evidence is seen of this in healthy gums, which should be pale pink in colour. Red

gums are a danger sign of a sluggish blood stream.

Therefore, by making a good supply of rose-hip syrup to last through the

winter, mothers are doing much to maintain the standard of dental teeth

in their children.
